switzerland´s first international art fair dedicated to photography

2024 program

In addition to exhibiting the very best in photography from 41 international galleries and over 150 artists, this year’s edition of photo basel boasts an extensive program based on fine art photography.

In this year’s edition photo basel shows a special exhibition called "Eyewitness Kurt Wyss in dialogue with Jean Dubuffet", an insight into the work of the acclaimed Basel photographer, who portrayed the French painter and sculptor about twenty times in his various working spaces between 1970 and Dubuffet’s death in 1985.

Beyond Photography was already celebrated euphorically at the fair in 2023. "Beyond Photography" is a curated selection of photographic positions that - as the name suggests - go beyond photography with the use of various mixing techniques, special printing techniques or a shift from the two-dimensional into the three-dimensional. Numerous different approaches contribute to a broadening of the medium of photography in these works to which the sector is dedicated.

Spotlight Africa

From documentary photographs that capture everyday life to almost abstract works that offer new perspectives, African photography perfectly reflects the richness and diversity of the African continent and the diaspora. With "Spotlight Africa", photo basel aims to promote the visibility of contemporary African photography and explicitly put these positions in the spotlight.

novum

In the newly created "novum" sector, photo basel is specifically showing works that have never been shown before. The "novum" positions are either completely new works - created especially for photo basel - or bodies of works that have not yet made it into the light of day because they have only now been properly discovered or rediscovered. These works have one thing in common, namely that they have never been exhibited or shown before and are therefore being presented to the photo basel public for the very first time, as a premiere.

For the second time in a row, the newly created Maurice de Mauriac Award will be awarded. Zurich-based, Swiss watchmaker Maurice de Mauriac will award and buy an outstanding photographic position at photo basel and add it to their art collection.

More highlights at this year’s photo basel art fair include a "photo basel spotlight" on the project "Zero Baseline Photography" by Patricia von Ah, in addition, dedicated panel talks will also be held on a daily basis – one particular starring guest will be Roger Ballen. Furthermore, to help recognise women's contribution to art, the Swiss magazine annabelle will choose a selection of female artists to highlight at the fair.
